CONNECTING WITH YOUR KIDS ON VACATION

One of the most important things you can do as a parent is connecting with kids. There will be a lot of things they will remember about their youth, but the memories that will remain with them the most will always be about the time you spent together. They’ll cherish the trips you took and the bond you shared while you traveled the globe, but if the connection isn’t there, they’ll remember that too. If you are trying to figure out how to connect with your kids on your next family vacation at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, use these strategies so that your upcoming journey will be one they'll never forget.

1. Don’t be afraid to let loose!

On family vacation, you don't have to be the strict disciplinarian that you are accustomed to being as a parent. Allow yourself to be silly at times. Laugh loudly. Snap the selfies. Dance when you want to. Do things you wouldn't normally do. Connecting with kids is so much more enjoyable when you are having fun alongside them.

2. Involve children in decision making

Allow your kids to help make decisions regarding what you do, where you go, and how you spend your time on your family vacation. Have them look through tours they might want to do, decide where you’re going to eat, or even just let them decide if you’ll spend the day by the pool or on the beach. Giving children the flexibility to participate in the planning of your family holiday can strengthen your bond in immeasurable ways.

3. Connect with your inner child!

Playing all day with kids makes connecting with them so much simpler! Children of all ages like playing, and they really enjoy it when their parents join in. Dance along at theme nights, construct sand castles, play sand soccer or volleyball, start up a game of "I Spy,” or bring out the tickle monster in your hotel room. Whatever game you choose to play, it will undoubtedly strengthen your bond.

4. Try new activities

Try a brand-new activity that no one in the family has ever done before. When you’re in Loreto, try snorkeling, exploring the secret coves of the bay on a paddleboard or kayak, play a game of golf at TPC Danzante Bay, sample chocolate clams, or visit one of Loreto’s historical sites. Ideally, your family trip will be jam-packed with memorable activities that will make it simpler to figure out how to connect with your kids.

5. Find some time to simply be present

We all have a tendency to be on the move constantly, but a vacation offers the ideal chance to physically stop and smell the roses. Take advantage of a more laid-back schedule. Give your children extra snuggles in the morning, quietly watch the sunset together in the evening, let them stay in the pool for as long as they want, and don’t hurry them out the door (unless of course you’re going to miss an amazing tour). The opportunity to just slow down will help you when connecting with kids on your next family vacation.

6. Say yes more often!

Figuring out how to connect with your kids might mean being more lenient, so stay up late, eat dessert right before bed, run around in your swimsuit, participate in theme nights, and allow them to do the same. Giving your children greater independence, and feeling happy as they explore their newfound freedom, is a terrific approach to strengthening your relationship with your kids.

7. Bring other kids along

Tell your loved ones and friends about your plans and see if they want to join! Sometimes interacting with kids is made easier when you bring other kids along. Invite grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, or maybe just a friend from school. Your children may be more open to trying new things when other people are around than if it were just you. Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto is a great place to host your family vacations because there is fun to be had for guests of all ages and it’s a safe environment where your kids can play, allowing you to feel more at ease.

8. Plan Parent-Child Dates

Planning separate dates with each of your children, if you have more than one, is a terrific way to strengthen your relationship while on a family vacation. This may entail having each parent take one child on a "special" excursion before switching, or it could entail letting each child choose a particular activity the whole family participates in. You could take one child on a kayak ride around Danzante Bay while the other plays a round of golf with your spouse, or you could participate in a cooking class with one child while the other goes on a hike with the rest of the family. One thing is for sure, one-on-one time is a great way to strengthen your bond, even if it is only an hour here and there.
